Kyoto University launches world's first wooden satellite for six-month mission

 

Astronauts are expected to release the satellite into a 400-kilometer orbit around the Earth.

Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry unveil world's first wooden satellite

The world's first wooden satellite, created by Japanese researchers, was launched into space on Tuesday in an initial test to evaluate the use of wood in lunar and Martian exploration. LignoSat , developed in collaboration between Kyoto University and construction company Sumitomo Forestry, will be transported to the International Space Station (ISS) on a SpaceX mission, before being released into orbit approximately 400 km above Earth .

Named after the Latin word for “wood,” this compact satellite seeks to demonstrate the potential of wood as a renewable material in space exploration, paving the way for the possibility of living and building in space using sustainable resources.
